There are some phases of life that are really solidified with certain purchases. That is how I felt about buying a minivan. Obviously I've been a mother for 3 years now, but owning a minivan really seals the deal on the motherhood club! Haha!
We decided to make a weekend of it since we were going to Utah to buy the van. Brett did lots of research online and we felt really good about heading down on January 1st and 2nd. We headed to my mom's house on New Year's Eve. I woke up the night before with a terrible stomach bug. Luckily by noon on New Year's Eve, I was feeling good enough to get out of bed, so we proceeded with our plans.
We spend New Year's Eve at my mom's house and the adults even stayed up until midnight! We got up and headed to Utah, leaving my mom with the kids. It was the first time I'd ever left the kids, and I was equally excited and nervous.
We checked out several places that day and ended up buying the first van we test drove later on in the night. We got a grey 2012 Honda Odyssey and it is in such good condition! That night, we stayed at Grandpa's condo downtown and headed to the mall to wander around. We hadn't planned on everything closing at 6:00, so we were a bit disappointed with that. We did get to enjoy the Christmas lights on Temple Square again, and it was pretty empty that night. It was perfect.
We headed back to the condo and minutes after we arrived and sat down to watch a little TV, the fire alarm went off! We looked at each other in surprise and Brett jumped up saying, "we gotta save the van!" Haha! We ran outside and all the elderly people that live there were so confused and concerned that they couldn't use the elevator to exit. We then smelled smoke and got really scared the whole place was going to burn down! We headed down the stairs and on the next floor down, some older lady came running towards us saying, "Its ok! I just burned my dinner really bad! There's no fire!" Haha! We were laughing so hard!!
The next day, we had some shopping to do. I didn't want to take the new van, because Utah drivers....can be rough, but Brett was excited to drive it. We went to IKEA, and while we were waiting in line to check out, they paged that a Honda Odyssey, license number.....had been hit! We knew it was us instantly! A lady side swiped us pulling in and dented the back fender. Bad luck!
We also had a warning light come on. We text the seller and he told us what to do and that he'd pay for it. All was good again. We went home that night and picked up the kids. Kayla was so excited that we had a DVD player and "lots of seats!" It is so nice to drive the minivan! I was totally in love with it, despite the fact that anytime I make a major purchase, I have some anxiety that it was the right choice.
While driving it around town, I noticed that hitting bumps, the radio would switch to the CD player. It was odd, but manageable. I did start to get nervous that there were some major electrical problem we hadn't known about.
On Saturday, Brett was cleaning the car with the radio playing and when he tried to start the car, the battery was dead. We jumped it and several new warning lights were on. I was starting to get really frustrated. We text some friends to get mechanic recommendations, and thankfully, our friend Jen said her husband would check it out,.
Brett took the van to him, and he ran the computer and reset the codes. He also suggested that we just leave a CD in the player to keep it from switching over. After much frustration, all is right with the van again! Its working great, and we're optimistic that we didn't actually buy a lemon. We just had a rough start.
We also have an appointment to fix the dent and the lady that hit us is going to pay for it. Hooray for honest people!
